About The Author

R. Austin Freeman (1862–1943) was a trained physician whose medical background reshaped detective fiction. He is best known for creating Dr. John Thorndyke, one of the earliest “forensic” detectives in literature—solving crimes through scientific analysis, legal knowledge, and careful reasoning rather than intuition or chance. Freeman’s work helped lay the
foundation for modern crime fiction, decades before forensic science became a staple of the genre.
